My hopes are shattered again.  I found out that my thyroid is low so I have to start taking synthetic thyroid hormones.  So the doc says he wants me to see what the thyroid stuff does because it will help me loose weight and improve my diabetes numbers.  Unfortunately he's not going to give me a recommendation for WLS until "we've tried everything else first" because "gastric bypass surgery has a 5% mortality rate" and supposedly my "situation is not that desperate yet"

So I go back in 6 weeks to have another round of blood work done to see how my thyroid and diabetes is doing and get a pap test.  Some how I can see him fucking around with my meds and putting off surgery for months or years.  I'm going to be thirty in less than a week and my husband and I what to have kids.  I don't have time to fuck around with this doctor.  I don't know what I'm going to do.  Maybe I'll give this doctor a few more visits then switch doctors.  I don't know.  Any of you know of a primary care physician in State College pa that isn't anti-wls?

Howdy!

Nothing really going on today.  Tom (my husband) was waiting for a call from the dentist hoping he could squeeze in or they would have a cancellation but no luck there, he'll have to wait for his regular appointment to get his broken tooth taken care of.  I have an appointment with a new doctor on Thursday.  Now that I have health insurance through Tom's work I had to switch doctors. I picked one at random from the list of providers.  The doctor Tom usually goes to couldn't get me in until September wtf is that about?  I made an appointment with a guy named Dr Adams.  The woman who called to "pre-register" me over the phone gave me a different name (that I don't remember)  I guess there are several GP's in that practice
so who knows who I will get to see.  I just really hope I won't have to fight with him tooth and nail over this gastric surgery thing.  The insurance I have will pay for it if my GP will refer me to a surgeon.  I figure if this doctor won't make the referral I'll just find a new doctor.

Health care in this country  is just like a luxury service industry.  If a doctor is going to charge $75 or more for 15 mins of his/her time then I'm damn well going to get the service that I want.  Don't get me wrong I don't think that people should be able to dictate to the doctors when they have no idea what they are asking for, but I was a nurse I have, at least, a basic understanding of what's going on with my body and how to fix it.  I know that if I have gastric weight loss surgery I'm looking at some serious risks here.  Malnutrition, death on the operating table, stomach and digestion troubles of all kinds.  I realize I'll probably be taking nutritional suplments for the rest of my life. And I will still have to watch calories and get plenty of exercise.  But the benifitis out weigh the risks by far for me.  I'm not yet 30 and I already have high blood pressure and type 2 diabeties.  I've tried many diets, nutri-system, south beach, 3 different ones given to me by doctors and dietitians, even fad diets like the cabbage soup diet and the 900 calorie diet.  These just don't work for me.  If I want to live to be 40 this is pretty much my last option.  I've seen studies that show how patients who have had gastric surgery have had nearly immediate results in regards to blood sugar levels, even before they see weight loss results.

Now that I have insurance that will pay for this procedure I will get it.  I will do everything my doctor asks to insure I can get this done.  First step, find a doctor that can listen to me and doesn't completely shun the idea of bariatric surgery.   Wish me luck with my appointment Thursday!

Love and Kisses,
Ericka
